Canon: Tales of Berseria

Background:
Tales of Berseria @ Tales of Wiki, Eleanor Hume @ Tales of Wiki, Tales of Berseria @ Wikipedia, a short summary by me
The Abbey, exorcists, daemons, malakim/seraphim.

The Wikipedia entry for Tales of Berseria and Tales of Wikipedia summarizes in game events. However, I've taken the time to explain some events that are especially important to Eleanor.

Something to note that the Wiki doesn't explain is Eleanor's past. At one point in canon, Eleanor reveals that her hatred for daemons comes from the fact that her mother was killed by them years ago. Her village was attacked, and her mother died protecting her. She reveals that that was part of her motivation in joining the Abbey. However, Eleanor in general wishes to protect the people. She carries a mirror that once belonged to her mother, claiming that it's important to her for that reason.

In her sidequest. she finally has the chance to avenge her mother by defeating the daemon that killed her mother. Through this sidequest, she finds resolution and determination to find an answer to what she wants to do, even after the journey with Velvet and Co are over.

There are some things that help her to slowly move on from her hatred. This is not only Velvet and Rokurou, but the daemon Kamoana. I believe that Kamoana and Eleanor's relationship is rather important to note.

While searching in a temple by Haria, they encounter a rather strong daemon whom Eleanor vows to kill. After chasing and killing this daemon, the daemon feeds itself to Kamoana. The group then discovers that this very daemon was Kamoana's mother. Eleanor, who feels a great amount of guilt and sadness for accidentally killing Kamoana's mother, does what she can to take care of her. It's there that we see Eleanor show a softer side towards Daemons - one that can even be seen as motherly. Kamoana's childlike-nature and kindness may very well be what first prompts Eleanor to discover that daemons are not all the same.

Though, Eleanor finds herself feeling somewhat awkward at times when it comes to taking care of Kamoana. She eventually asks another therion - Medissa - to take care of and tend to Kamoana. Medissa had once been a mother before losing her own daughter. Through asking Medissa to help take care of Kamoana, Eleanor helps her to find a new purpose despite being a type of daemon. This is another example that shows that she moves on from being rather judgemental of daemons.

Personality:
When Velvet first meets Eleanor in Tales of Berseria she's torn between her duty and what's best for the people around her. Eleanor, at heart, is someone who wants what's best for others and the people who live in Migand. It's this that becomes her motivation throughout the game: from joining The Abbey and then later rebelling against them. Though, we see her kindness through many moments in the game. For example, this can be seen when Laphicet-a younger malak-is in danger: Eleanor does not hesitate in forming a pact with him in order to save him. The two quickly form a close bond, Eleanor oftentimes showing a great amount of concern for Laphicet. However, it is not only that, but the way that Eleanor attempts to cheer even a stranger up if they're down, offering advice, good luck, or even kind words to them. She's rather empathetic to most people she approaches, sympathizing with how people who are in danger might feel, and oftentimes trying to understand why they may feel the way that they do.

However, we do see a rather judgmental side of her despite that. Due to the fact that not only her village was destroyed by daemons, but her mother was killed, we first see her showing a great amount of hatred towards Velvet and the others. Albeit slowly warming up to the others and eventually regarding them as friends, Eleanor shows a good amount of caution and agitation towards the daemons in the group. It is only due to an agreement that she made with Velvet that she decides to talk in a civil manner with them at first. Ultimately, it's the unknowing murder of a young girl's mother that pushes Eleanor to disregard her hatred towards daemons. After a family was changed into deamons, Eleanor murders one of the daemons. However, it is soon revealed that the daemon she killed was the mother of a young girl, Kamoana. Feeling a guilt, despair, and sympathy for the girl, Eleanor requests that they take her in and take care of her. It is then that Eleanor shows a kinder side to daemons. Though this may initially be out of despair for what she had done, Eleanor quickly shows fondness for Kamoana.

With that said, we do often see a more motherly side of Eleanor through both Laphicet and Kamoana. Perhaps this can be due to the fact that Laphicet is Eleanor's vessel (therefore, the two are tied to one another personally), but Eleanor is oftentimes seen doting over Laphicet. Whether she's asking if he's alright, or even scolding other members of the party for setting a bad example for him: she appears nearly motherly to him. On another hand, Eleanor does what she can to protect Kamoana, as well. It may very well be because she feels guilt for killing the girl's mother. However, whether or not it's due to that entirely, Eleanor takes care of Kamoana to the best of her ability. However, at one point, she does mention that she's somewhat awkward with children. In fact, her doting and caring nature towards children may very well be because Eleanor is kind at heart in general.

Eizen reveals that Eleanor is one that has a natural resonance to see and hear malakim. While people have the ability to see and hear malakim in general through most of Tales of Berseria's canon, this is not something that humans can always do. In fact, after people lose the ability to do such a thing, Eleanor is still able to communicate with Laphicet and Eizen (who are both malakim). This is because she is pure of heart. This means that she is someone who trusts both her emotions and decisions: she does not let her emotions cloud her judgement, nor does she allow her thoughts to become twisted. Though, she is in no means perfect. During her sidequest, she nearly becomes malevolent due to the fact that she finds the daemon that had killed her mother. However, she is able to overcome what was making her malevolent, becoming stronger through that uncertainty.

Eleanor isn't without her flaws. Easily fired up or quick to jump into dangerous situations, Eleanor sometimes ends up in situations where she's in over her head. This rash behavior can be seen when she follows Velvet through a portal after Velvet fights Atorius despite not knowing where it leads, or when she kills Kamoana's mother merely because she is a daemon. These rash decisions oftentimes have consequences that Eleanor must face. However, depending on the situation, she will do what she can to own up and face those very consequences. Another example of this is can be seen when she confronts Velvet as an enemy for the last time. Upon fighting her, she agrees that if she loses, she will do whatever Velvet asks of her. When she does lose, she does indeed do most of what Velvet asks.

Despite these flaws, it's important to note that Eleanor's behavior is never malicious. The core of her character is one of pure-heart and kindness.

She is rather dutiful. When following The Abbey's orders, she does what she can to do just that: follow orders to the best of her ability. She even agrees to spy on Velvet and co and bring Laphicet to Artorius, if only because it is an order. Though, this also shows when it comes to her agreement with Velvet: Eleanor doing just about everything that Velvet asks of her. Eleanor is unwavering in both what she believes in and her promises to others.

She can be rather serious to a fault, especially when it comes to justice. Sometimes she won't be able to tell when a joke is being told, or will seem rather stern when it comes to someone mentioning a crime.

Though, it's important to note that the party did see through the fact that she was spying. Eleanor is a rather poor liar. She can be rather obvious when it comes to the truth of any situation she attempts to lie in, and she does admit to her lies after a while.

In a sense, Eleanor is rather open-minded. She comes to understand that things are different than what she had believed in with ease: whether it is learning that malakim have a free will of their own, or the fact that daemons can be quite human, Eleanor can adapt and learn about new things with little trouble. She does admit that some things are rather shocking to learn, however. At the same time, Eleanor does seem rather stubborn in what she believes in - whether it is how she feels about Daemons being evil beings, or The Abbey doing what is right. With that said, Eleanor is also very knowledgeable about different things in general. She oftentimes tells the party about a variety of different foods from different cultures back at home, or about the history behind different objects. Sometimes, when Eizen tells the party one thing, she'll correct him or question what he's saying.

Eleanor's relationship with each party member also helps to show her character development. For example, Eleanor is Velvet's enemy at first. Considering that Eleanor does think of daemons as enemies, this is not surprising. Through the course of the game, Eleanor proves to be Velvet's foil. The two contrast one another in beliefs and goals, yet eventually develop and grow to be friends with one another. Velvet even entrusts Laphicet to Eleanor at the very end of their journey. Rokurou is yet another example of Eleanor's growth. He is also a daemon, yet the both of them agree to get together one-on-one during the end of their journey. There is also Laphicet and Eizen. Considering that most of The Abbey considers malakim as nothing but tools, the both of them show that Eleanor comes to respect malakim as living and breathing creatures. She comes to understand that they have feelings and thoughts just like humans do. As said, Eleanor even shows a motherly side to Laphicet, supporting him and helping to take care of him to the best of her ability.

Abilities:
FIGHTING: Eleanor is skilled at using a spear as a weapon. She can move quickly, dodge, attack, and defend herself with ease. As an exorcist, Eleanor has been trained in fighting against enemies. Here is a list of her artes/abilities (and here is a video of them)! She can do things like heal allies, cause things such as paralysis, slow her enemies down, stun them, and poison them. Her artes are also elemental focused. This can include using attacks that involve fire, water/ice, earth, wind, and void (an element that others may classify as light). As she fights, she can learn new abilities and artes/spells to help her allies and herself. Her strength is in the fact that she can use both artes and physical abilities, making her a rather worth asset to have in a fight. She'll jump, twirl her spear, thrust it forward, and do so quickly. It's safe to say that she has rather good reflexes.
EXORCIST RELATED ABILITIES: An exorcist in Berseria is someone who can control and use malakim in order to help them fight. While Malakim normally lack free will when they are tied to their exorcist, Eleanor takes Laphicet as her malakim - whom has indeed been given free will. Malakim can use their exorcist as a vessel. With this, an exorcist can help malakim prevent themselves from being tainted from malevolence. At the same time, malakim can reside within Eleanor in order to properly rest. In order to have this bond, an exorcist must form a pact with their chosen malakim. This pact binds the malakim to their exorcist. However, if the exorcist that they are connected becomes malevolent themselves, the malakim will become tainted in turn. Normally, malakim are seen fighting along side their chosen exorcist. It's also worth noting that an exorcist will grant a malakim a "true name" or "other name" when forming a pact with them. A true name is something that is said to be sacred and not to be shared with others. When a malakim shares them with others, it's said that they trust the other person completely with their life (or it's a love confession).
RESONANCE: Eleanor can see and hear malakim. In the majority of Berseria's story, malakim become visible to all humans. However, this normally is not possible. According to Eizen, those who are pure of heart can normally see/hear malakim when others cannot. Even without malakim being visible to all humans, Eizen claims that she would still have the ability to communicate with them.
OTHER: She says at one point in canon that she's skilled at sewing!

Alignment:
I'm going to be choosing elios for Eleanor! I feel as though love and hate defines her best. Eleanor has trained as an exorcist because she claims she hates daemons. However, Eleanor shows things like admiration and kindness for those who she's fond of. Eleanor also often claims that she wants to do what's best for the people and those around her, making it her goal at the end of the game to continue making the world a better place. It's safe to say that she loves her world and the people in it.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Test Drive 1, 2, 3, 4.

Her test drive prompt has a sample with emotions affecting the world! If that's not enough, I'd be happy to provide another one.

Questions: Not a question, but just a note that I plan to make an opt out post for anyone who doesn't want to thread with Eleanor or for those who want to avoid spoilers from the game entirely.
